Whiplash Injury

Whiplash is a common occurrence associated with any hyperflexion-extention injury. The mechanism of injury is an acceleration-deceleration event. These types of events often occur in auto accidents or sporting events. Injuries occur to multiple structures. Commonly involved are the muscles, tendons, ligaments, bone, joint, and nerve tissue. This is why the often result in significant injury and or disability.

Often there are limited objective findings. Whiplash in rare cases can cause severe life threatening or life changing conditions, such as spinal cord and traumatic brain injury. Subjective complaints must be carefully reviewed to avoid missing a potentially serious injury. Unfortunately many general practicioners just don't have this type of training.

Making the appropriate diagnosis and providing the correct treatment is always the goal at Barton Chiropractic in Concord. Our doctors take the time to take a proper history as well as perform comprehensive physical assessments. As auto injury specialist, we have found that the history is invaluable because it allows the doctor to ascertain factors such as the mechanism of injury, preexisting problems that may have been aggravated, and steps the patient may have taken in self treatment.

Studies have shown that impacts as slow as 5mph can cause permanent damage. Often symptoms do not show up for 24 hours and may take as long as two years to surface.
